The newly-elected Conservative MP for this massive riding in Alberta has given up his seat so Leader Pierre Poilievre can run in federal by-election.听

A Conservative MP-elect in Alberta is resigning so party leader Pierre Poilievre can run in a federal by-election.听

Damien Kurek, first elected in 2019, announced Friday he would give up his seat in Battle River-Crowfoot, a massive riding that covers much of Central Alberta east of the highway that links Calgary and Edmonton.听

Poilievre failed to win in the riding of Ottawa-Carleton on Monday night.听

鈥淧ierre Poilievre just finished a remarkable national campaign that received the highest vote share since 1988. An unstoppable movement has grown under his leadership and I know we need to have Pierre fighting in the House of Commons to hold the Liberal government to account,鈥 Kurek said in a Friday release.听

鈥淭his is what鈥檚 best for Canada, and it is what鈥檚 best for Battle River-Crowfoot,鈥 he said.听

Kurek won a massive victory in the riding on Monday, claiming 53,502 votes, which was 46,000 more than second-place finisher Liberal Brent Sutton.听
