A Peachland man has been named to the Order of Canada.

Donald Hayley is one of Canada鈥檚 leading permafrost engineers, according to the Governor-General鈥檚 office.

Gov.-Gen. Mary Simon named 83 people to the order on Monday.

鈥淎 cold region geotechnical expert, he has contributed to the development of the Canadian Arctic, which has benefited communities and the economy,鈥 the governor general鈥檚 office said. 鈥淗is groundbreaking innovations include sloped thermosyphons, Canada鈥檚 first frozen core dam, and the design and construction of safer winter ice roads.鈥

Hayley鈥檚 name on the officer鈥檚 list appears right before B.C.鈥檚 provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

The Canadian Permafrost Association has an award named after Hayley.

鈥淭his award, created by the CPA in 2021, recognizes outstanding contributions to permafrost engineering over a career. It is named in honour of Donald W. Hayley for his impacts on the field of infrastructure and resource development in permafrost environments in Canada and abroad for over 50 years,鈥 the group says on its website.

Hayley was the first winner of the award in 2021.

鈥淎fter his retirement from EBA (now Tetra Tech Canada) Don took a short break and then formed Hayley Arctic Geoconsulting as a sole proprietorship,鈥 the organization said in handing out the award. 鈥淭hroughout his career he contributed to numerous studies for infrastructure and resource development projects on permafrost terrain. These include arctic pipelines, highways and winter roads, northern mines and exploratory drilling and production structures in coastal regions and the offshore.鈥
