A Kelowna man has been charged with second-degree murder after attacking two women with a weapon on Friday.

Bailey Plover died from her injuries, Kelowna RCMP said on Friday. The second woman was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The BC Prosecution service approved charges of second-degree murder against James Edward Plover. He is slated to appear in court on July 10.

Police said Plover knew his victims.

The assault followed a motor-vehicle incident and took place in front of witnesses in the 1900 block of Enterprise Way, police said. Online news site Castanet said the weapon was a hammer.

鈥淭his was a highly visible and tragic event, and we recognize the profound impact it has had on many individuals and the community,鈥 said Insp. Chris Goebel, of the Kelowna RCMP in a news release.

Witnesses provided assistance to the victims and information to police that helped identify the suspect, said Cpl. Allison Konsmo.

Online court records show James Plover was charged with uttering threats and assault by choking last year, but the charges were stayed, and that he and Bailey Plover were involved in family law litigation and face foreclosure proceedings launched by two separate banks.
