Curiosity on the part of a Peachland dog saved the lives of two kittens, the SPCA says.聽
Laynee, a shih tzu, was let out for a bathroom break by her owner Brady Verhaeghe early in the morning of July 11.聽
The dog wouldn鈥檛 come back in, and Verhaeghe eventually went outside to see what Laynee was so focused on. Two kittens were discovered in a bush.聽
Verhaege brought them into the house, where Laynee was content to have his new kitten companions crawl all over him.聽
When it became clear to Verhaeghe that the mother cat was nowhere to be seen and unlikely to come back, he took the kittens to the Kelowna SPCA.聽
鈥淲hen we examined the kittens, they were really thin and their gums were pale but they were bright-eyed and hungry, which was a good sign,鈥 shelter manager Shannon Paille says. 鈥淭hey are so young they need to be bottle-fed.鈥
The kittens have received treatments for parasites and been vaccinated. They鈥檒l be available for adoption when they are eight weeks old.聽
The SPCA says people should not necessarily bring in stray kittens, as their mother may be out hunting. But if they appear sick or injured, or are not in a safe place and there鈥檚 no sign of the mother returning, the SPCA will accept such kittens.聽
