Penticton RCMP has verified that a cyclist participating in Sunday's Okanagan Granfondo Penticton is dead.

"Penticton RCMP are now investigating a fatal collision that occurred on White Lake Road near St Andrew鈥檚 Drive earlier today. The incident involved a motor vehicle and cyclists participating in the GrandFondo event," Penticton RCMP spokesperson Cst. Kelly Brett posted in a press release issued Sunday at 3 p.m.聽

According to the release, two additional cyclists sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.

聽The investigation into the incident is on-going and motorists are reminded to avoid the area by taking alternate traffic routes.聽聽

"The RCMP extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all those impacted by this devastating event," Brett said in the release.

Officials from Okanagan Granfondo聽released a statement expressing heartbreak over the fatal incident and聽conveyed condolences to those impacted. They confirmed the organization's full cooperation with authorities. They also suggested any cyclists or spectators who may need support due to this incident to call 811 or access HealthlinkBC for support resources.聽

There were an estimated 3,000 riders participating in the event.聽
